Short answer

Improve acquisition economics, not just the price of an enquiry. This guide sets out practical checks, examples and the limits of the recommendations.

First, determine what kind of lead you need

Lowering the CPL means reducing the platform's costs per enquiry. But the business needs not just any filled-in form, but an enquiry from a person with the appropriate need, geography and ability to buy. Therefore, first agree on what you consider an enquiry, a qualified lead and a client. Clicking on Telegram does not confirm that a person wrote.

Separate duplicates, spam, requests from outside your region, and contacts for an outdated service. Don't delete them from history without a trace: the reason for rejection helps you understand exactly what needs to be changed in the ad. Comparing periods must use the same rules.

Count the funnel, not one pretty number

IndicatorCalculationWhat question does it answer?
CPLPlatform costs / enquiriesHow much does it cost to get a form?
Cost per qualified leadExpenses / relevant enquiriesHow much does a relevant enquiry cost?
CACAgreed acquisition costs / new customersHow much does it cost to acquire a customer?

Illustrative example: campaign A spends $400, receives 100 enquiries and gains 4 customers: CPL is $4 and the media-only CAC is $100. Campaign B spends the same $400, receives 50 enquiries and gains 10 customers: CPL is $8 but media-only CAC is $40. Cheaper leads do not necessarily mean better results. Add management and other costs separately if they are included in your CAC definition.

Find the place of loss

  • Few clicks: check audience, message and format alignment.
  • Clicks without enquiries: check the offer, mobile page, speed and form delivery.
  • There are enquiries that are not very relevant: specify the geography, conditions, price and form criteria.
  • There are quality enquiries, few sales: check response speed, product availability, objections and deal cycle.

Separate Google Search, paid social and remarketing. Intent differs, so the same CPL does not imply the same value. Before rejecting a channel for higher lead costs, check what happens after the enquiry.

Test one significant hypothesis

After diagnosis, define a specific change: show delivery terms before the form, for example, or separate services with different needs. Record the baseline period, change and decision criteria. Changing website, creative, audiences and budget together makes the outcome hard to explain.

Don't judge the test by just one day. Consider fluctuations in demand and time to sale. At the same time, do not proceed with the test mechanically when the form is broken, the geography is clearly wrong, or the costs have already exceeded the agreed risk. A clear stopping rule is more important than the abstract "give the algorithm time".

What the real case shows

In the case of children's playgrounds archive indicates $0.61 per lead and $20-25 per customer. This data shows the different stages of the funnel. Periods and samples are not detailed, so we do not reduce them to one exact formula and do not use them as a price promise for another business.

It is better to collect your own data in one report: date, source, campaign, contact status, reason for rejection and the result of the sale. How to organize it, we analyze in materials about advertising analytics.

When you can scale

After lowering CPL, check lead volume, quality and the team's ability to respond. If cheaper forms attract more spam, optimise for quality again. For the next step, use the controlled scaling plan.

In Google Ads, it's important not to confuse a confirmed enquiry with contact clicks as equally valuable primary conversions. Google: primary and secondary conversions explains the difference between these actions. The detailed way of measuring fits the actual business funnel.

Before the next step

Record your starting data and decision criteria. Calculation examples are illustrative unless explicitly linked to a case study. Results from one project do not guarantee results for another business.
