Connect clicks, enquiries and sales in one measurement framework. This guide sets out practical checks, examples and the limits of the recommendations.
Give every enquiry a clear definition
For a service business, the primary goal is a received enquiry from someone interested in discussing a need. Phone clicks, form opens and Telegram clicks show interest, but do not prove that an enquiry was received. Agree on conversion definitions before launch so campaigns optimise for useful enquiries rather than easy interactions.
Lead tracking starts with checking delivery. A form should show success only after the receiving system accepts the data, not just after a button click. If submission fails, provide a clear alternative way to get in touch.
What to record with each enquiry
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Page and button | Which offer brought the visitor to the form |
| UTM parameters | Channel, campaign and ad variation |
| Click ID, if available | Matching clicks to outcomes where the necessary conditions are met |
| Date and unique enquiry number | Finding duplicates and repeated submissions |
| Status and reason for refusal | Lead quality and sales performance |
Do not ask visitors to enter their traffic source: record it in hidden fields. Keep names, phone numbers and message text out of general analytics events and URLs. Process personal data in the appropriate system with the necessary access controls.
Primary and secondary conversions in Google Ads
A confirmed enquiry can be a primary conversion; a messenger click can be a secondary observation. Do not count the same form submission through both lead_submit and a thank-you page view as two leads. Reloading the thank-you page is not a new enquiry.
Google: primary and secondary conversions explains how primary and secondary actions affect reporting and optimisation. Check custom goals and campaign settings separately: a secondary label alone does not establish how an action is used. After integration, test every form type, not only the hero form.
Why Ads, GA4 and your spreadsheet may differ
Systems use different attribution rules, conversion windows, time zones and dates for assigning conversions. Some users also limit tracking. Differences in totals do not always indicate an error, but they should be explained.
Start with a specific enquiry: confirm that it was received, the event was recorded once and the source was saved. Compare the same period and definition. The receiving system confirms delivery; the ad platform reports attribution rather than every business contact.
A report that helps you make decisions
At agreed intervals, review spend, received enquiries, qualified leads, new customers and revenue where it can be reliably linked to the channel. Include rejection reasons and pending deals. For long sales cycles, review enquiries received in the same period as a cohort, alongside calendar-month sales.
Illustrative example: 20 enquiries are still being discussed. Treating them all as lost at the end of the week understates the channel; counting them as sales overstates it. Mark them as pending and update the outcome after the customer decides.
Essential checks before launch
- Complete the form from your phone or computer.
- Check delivery, error and resend.
- Check hidden page, CTA and campaign parameters.
- Make sure that one enquiry does not generate two leads.
- Separately check clicks on Telegram and phone.
- Appoint someone responsible for statuses and feedback.
This is the base for contextual advertising and paid social advertising. After collecting the data, proceed to CPL and CAC evaluations, and not to an automatic budget increase.
Before the next step
Record your starting data and decision criteria. Calculation examples are illustrative unless explicitly linked to a case study. Results from one project do not guarantee results for another business.
