Short answer

Diagnosing price increases based on data, not feelings. This guide sets out practical checks, examples and the limits of the recommendations.

Make sure you are comparing the same action

A higher conversion cost does not always mean worse advertising. Check that the conversion definition, period, time zone and reporting rules are unchanged. Form opens and successful enquiries are not directly comparable. Changes in the mix of channels or products can also shift the average.

Please check separately whether there is a delay in the processing of enquiries or a measurement failure. Match the records in the sales system with the advertising report. If the number of contacts is the same, but the events are fewer, first investigate the registration, rather than turning off the campaign.

Divide the cost into two components

In a simplified website model, CPL equals CPC divided by the click-to-enquiry conversion rate. This separates higher traffic costs from lower page conversion. Use the formula only when spend, clicks and enquiries refer to the same dataset.

Conventional example: with a click for $0.50 and a conversion of 5%, the enquiry costs $10. If the click goes up to $0.75 for the same conversion, the price becomes $15. If the click hasn't changed, but the conversion has dropped to 2.5%, the price becomes $20. These are arithmetic examples, not guidelines for a specific niche.

If traffic becomes more expensive

Check for changes in demand, competition, geography and campaign structure. Compare homogeneous segments, not just the overall result. More expensive conversions may be of better quality, so don't judge by CPC alone. In search ads, see the actual search terms; in social networks — matching the audience and the argument.

  • Has the share of new geographies or devices changed?
  • Have broader themes and different buyer intent been added?
  • Are the product, price and availability still relevant?
  • Does the seasonal peak compare to the normal period?

If the conversion of the page deteriorates

Follow the path from an ad to an enquiry on the phone. Check for speed, form errors, clarity of the proposal, and compliance with expectations. Even strong advertising does not compensate for the situation when, after clicking, a person sees a different price or does not find the advertised product. Check the availability of the product along with the technical status of the page.

Compare website changes with the date performance declined. A new form, prompt or required field can affect the journey, but timing alone does not prove causation. Test one change where possible and retain the previous version.

Evaluate quality and sales cycle

A more expensive enquiry may lead to more buyers, and a cheaper enquiry may lead to more random contacts. Add qualifications and sales based on time from enquiry to deal. Comparing fresh lead with long-processed lead creates a false conclusion. Separate the problem of the price of a request from the problem of handling it.

Check the speed of the first response, the number of connection attempts and the reasons for failures. If the team doesn't keep up after the increase in volume, the ad performance may look worse due to the operational constraint. Feed quality data into a shared report rather than evaluating ads in isolation.

Order of action without chaotic changes

First, restore the correct measurement, then localize the segment, check the user journey, and only then change the campaign. Write down the hypothesis, the criterion and the time of the test. Do not change bids, creatives, audience and page at the same time: the result will be difficult to explain.

Continue with cost-per-lead improvement plan or Google Ads clicks-without-enquiries guide. If the price has gone up since the expansion, take a look principles of scaling.
