The role of search, product feed and campaign goals in store advertising. This guide sets out practical checks, examples and the limits of the recommendations.
Don't run all formats just because they are available
For an online store, Google Ads can work with search queries, a product catalog and several advertising surfaces. The first choice depends on the assortment, demand and availability of data. Before launch, check prices, availability, shipping, mobile shopping and order tracking. If the store is not ready to accept orders, choosing a campaign will not solve the problem.
Define the business goal: new customers, sales in priority categories or returning visitors. Assess products with different margins and stock levels accordingly, rather than relying only on purchase-event counts. When reporting revenue, check currencies, duplicates, cancellations and what each metric represents.
Search, Shopping and Performance Max
| Tool | The role | Preparation is required |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Answer a relevant search query | Search terms, ads and a relevant landing page |
| Shopping | Product ads from your catalogue | Merchant Center, feed and correct data |
| Performance Max | A goal-based campaign across Google channels | Appropriate targets, materials and product data as needed |
Shopping is a product ad format, and Performance Max is a campaign type that can also use a product catalog. These are not three mutually exclusive buttons. Google Help for Shopping explains the role of Merchant Center and the organization of product listings.
Feed is part of advertising quality
Product names, prices, availability and links must match the landing page. Resolve feed errors and disapprovals before concluding that the format does not work. Titles and categories should accurately describe the product, not become lists of keywords.
In the lighting store case , work began with the feed and Merchant Center, followed by search and shopping campaigns. The archive reports 484 enquiries at UAH 131 each but does not separate revenue or results by format. This illustrates preparation, not a universal advantage for Shopping.
Performance Max goals and assessment
Performance Max uses Google's advertising channels and automation. If the campaign optimises for a simple interaction rather than a purchase, more interactions will not solve the store's problem. Check selected goals, conversion values and duplicate orders.
Official description of Performance Max explains the role of goals and channels. Don't transfer the general averages from the reference to your store forecast. Format does not guarantee a specific ROAS: assortment, margin, site and competitive environment remain important.
How to choose the first test
- Highlight categories with availability, clear demand and acceptable margins.
- Check mobile checkout and order confirmation.
- Agree on test spend and what counts as a purchase.
- Compare platform reports with payments, cancellations and returns.
- Expand after checking results.

Before the next step
Record your starting data and decision criteria. Calculation examples are illustrative unless explicitly linked to a case study. Results from one project do not guarantee results for another business.
